Play Responsibly
Camelot is committed to operating The National Lottery in a socially responsible way. On the one hand it needs to keep the Lottery's portfolio of games exciting and fun to play, increase sales and therefore returns to the Good Causes, but not to the detriment of the vulnerable, like low income groups or underage players.
Camelot recognises that the need for promoting responsible play starts at the very beginning, when a game is being designed. Therefore Camelot has introduced a research and design tool - the Game Design protocol - that allows us to classify a new game as having a high, medium or low potential for there to be excessive play among vulnerable players (namely low income groups and people with a tendency to gamble) or illegal play (children aged under 16). By classifying the games we can decide a suitable course of action which could include amending the launch structure or even deciding not to launch the game.
On top of this, every draw-based game Camelot wishes to introduce has to be approved and licensed by our regulator, the National Lottery Commission, who consider all aspects of a new game in that process. Our responsibility is carried through to the advertising and marketing of National Lottery games. Once a game has been designed, we must ensure that our advertising strategies do not target under 16s or low-income players, and that all marketing of lottery games complies with the relevant codes of practice.
And finally, all marketing of lottery games must comply with The National Lottery Advertising Code of Practice and Sales Promotion Code of Practice and a strict broadcast policy that protects our advertising from being too attractive or available to under 16s. This means games must adhere to an extensive range of measures to take player protection into account when developing Camelot's advertising and sales promotion strategy
